Maintenance Tip

We all know that a high electricity bill is something we want to avoid. To help with your energy use and costs this month our maintenance tip is simple: LED bulbs!

SCE&G now has an EnergyWise Savings Store where you can buy a large order of Energy Star bulbs up to 60% off retail price, and have them mailed directly to your door.

Why should you buy LED bulbs? Here are some key benefits!

  • The average household has about 40 light sockets. Switching to ENERGY STAR lighting can save up to $1,600 over the life of 40 bulbs.
  • Use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 6 times longer.
  • Produce about 70-90% less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can help cut energy costs associated with home cooling.

For more information, call 1-877-510-7234 or go to http://www.energyfederation.org/sceg.

Pear-Pecan Upside-Down Cake

Total Time: 3hrs 20min

  • 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for greasing; 3 tablespoons cut into small pieces, 4 tablespoons softened
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 3 Bosc pears, peeled, halved lengthwise and cored
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup pecans, toasted and finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk, at room temperature
  • Whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Butter the inside of a 5-quart round slow cooker, then line it completely with a large sheet of foil and butter the foil. Turn the cooker on low. Sprinkle the cut-up butter and the brown sugar over the foil in the cooker. Add the pears, arranging them in a circle, cut-side down.

Mix the flour, pecans, cornmeal, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a large bowl. In the large bowl of a mixer, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on low speed until just blended.

Increase the speed to high and beat until light and fluffy, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed, about 5 minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.

With the mixer on low speed, beat the dry ingredients into the butter mixture in two batches, alternating with the milk and beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed just until the batter is smooth. Spread over the pears in the slow cooker.

Drape paper towels over the top of the slow cooker (not touching the cake) to prevent condensation from dripping onto the cake. Cover and cook on low until the cake sets and the sides brown, about 3 hours. Turn off the cooker and let the cake rest about 20 minutes.

Lift the cake by the foil and place on a rack to cool. Carefully invert onto a platter and peel off the foil. Serve with whipped cream, if desired.

Wellness Corner: Avocados are packed with carotenoids

Avocados are a great source of lutein, a carotenoid that works as an antioxidant and helps protect against eye disease. They also contain the related carotenoids zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, as well as tocopherol (vitamin E).

But avocados aren’t just a rich source of carotenoids by themselves-they also help you get more of these nutrients from other foods. Carotenoids are lipophilic (soluble in fat, not water), so eating carotenoid-packed foods like fruits and vegetables along with monounsaturated-fat-rich avocados helps your body absorb the carotenoids. An easy way to do this is to add sliced avocado to a mixed salad.

Trash Compactor

Please remember the recycling receptacle to the left of the trash compactor is for broken down CARDBOARD BOXES ONLY.

Do not dispose of large bulky items in the compactor. Disposing of such items actually causes our compactor to either jam or burn the motor causing garbage back up that is very unsightly.

You can dispose of them at our local waste/recycling convenience center located at 130 Castle Rock Road, open 7:30am-7pm closed on Wednesdays. This is less than a mile from the community. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Pet Reminder

We have been noticing a pet waste issue around our community. Please be reminded that we do fine $60 for anyone who is caught not picking up after their pet. We want everyone here at Ashton Pointe to enjoy their home. Let’s work together on keeping the community looking beautiful!
