Beaufort is a "Best Places to Retire in the US"

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, August 09, 2018

Abberly Pointe, Beaufort, SCWhere are the best places to retire in the U.S.? According to TopRetirements.com the absolute best cities and towns for older Americans have good weather, access to health care, low property taxes, and a certain “wow” factor. Throw in access to adult education, cultural activities, job opportunities for older Americans, low housing costs and income-tax rates, low crime rate, and good walkability and livability — and you get a list of both well-known and lesser-known cities and towns that retirees might fancy.

6. Beaufort, S.C.

Beaufort, a city of just 12,000, is described as a “big retirement destination,” especially for those who like charm, history and golf (you won’t be far from Hilton Head). This 304 acres of charming town in South Carolina’s Low Country has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Plus, Beaufort has a diverse economy — the University of South Carolina has a branch here. Another advantage: South Carolina is an income-tax-friendly state for retirees. Of course, there are some blemishes: if you fancy living in a big city, this might not be the place for you; it is a small town. (It was once named the “Best Small Southern Town” by Southern Living magazine.) People looking for urban excitement might find this golf- and boating-oriented area boring after a while.

So Many Accolades for Beaufort, SC

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 01, 2018

Abberly Pointe, Beaufort, SCBeaufort has gotten a lot of love over the past few years, but nothing like what was bestowed upon it in 2017. And we’re not talking about love from locals and visitors alike, but from the rest of the country. It turned out to be the year of accolades for Beaufort.

She’s been named the Best Small Town in the South earlier in the spring by Southern Living and then was named The Town to Visit in SC by U.S. News and World Report just a few months ago. A few years back, Beaufort voted ‘America’s Happiest Seaside Town’ in Coastal Living magazine poll. And, there have been lots more in between.

In 2017, Beaufort was recognized by major magazines including Southern Living and Country Living; newspapers including USA Today and U.S. News & World Report; as well as travel, information and lifestyle websites including MSN, TripAdvisor and Lifehack.

Several of our local businesses are also noticed around the country. We have a top 10 drive in movie theater, a top 100 outdoor restaurant, an inn added to the prestigious Southern Living Hotel Collection and another named top 10 bed & breakfast. We’re also home to the best beach community and one of the most charming streets in the south.

Here’s a list of kudos that Beaufort has received in 2017, the year of accolades.

When you’re done reading it, you won’t be able to help but to smile and be proud. This is your home.

The grand daddy of them all came in the spring of 2017 when Southern Living Magazine named Beaufort SC ‘Best Small Town in the South’

In a twist, of sorts, Beaufort was also named the Drunkest Spot in South Carolina by USA Today.

Tidalholm was given the title of Most Famous Historic House in South Carolina by Country Living Magazine

USA Today also showed some of our downtown restaurants some love in an article that called Beaufort a ‘town that lives to eat’.

Also in 2017, the Pat Conroy Literary Center was (rightfully) named a National Literary Landmark and the Anchorage 1770 Inn was placed into the Southern Living Hotel Collection as one of the best inns in the entire country. (You’ve got to be something really special to make that list.)

Our local colleges puffed out their chests a bit this past year when the Technical College of the Lowcountry was named the Best Community College in South Carolina by BestColleges.com and the University of South Carolina Beaufort was recognized as the 5th fastest growing college in the U.S.

In a town s special as Beaufort, there’s so much to love and so much to be proud about.

Beaufort, SC: The Prettiest Town in South Carolina

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, July 25, 2018

Abberly Pointe, Beaufort, SCBeaufort can add another prize to its trophy cabinet: Architectural Digest named it the prettiest town in South Carolina.

The town’s moss-blanketed live oaks, centuries-old homes, and Waterfront Park seemed to charm the magazine, which chose the prettiest town in every state.

Architectural Digest described Beaufort as having “historical buildings and walking tours documenting its 500 years of history.”

The town, which was founded in 1711, was named No. 6 on Southern Living Magazine’s list of ‘The South’s Best Small Towns’ in March. It was also listed as No. 16 on Southern Living’s ‘The South’s Friendliest Small Towns’ list.

Beaufort Water Festival: Here's What You Need to Know

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Abberly Pointe, Beaufort, SCSummertime is here, and it won't be long until the annual quintessentially Lowcountry celebration in downtown Beaufort begins: The Beaufort Water Festival.

The 63rd Beaufort Water Festival starts July 13 and continues through July 22., but some events are already getting started. If you live in an apartment in Beaufort, SC, here is everything you need to know!

The main event starts with fireworks and Parris Island Marine Band for opening ceremonies July 13. All of the traditional Water Festival events return, plus a free Hometown Tuesday event instituted in 2017 after Hurricane Matthew.

Outside food, drinks and coolers aren’t allowed in the park during the Water Festival. And leave strollers at home during the Concert in the Park. Because of the large crowd, the strollers are a safety risk and get in the way of those moving around.

Blankets and chairs are a smart idea. To ensure a good seat, get in and set up near the stage early. The park is closed for an hour before the gates open, so set up before the gates close or soon after they open for the best seats.

Here are some other important things to know as the Water Festival approaches, including parking and ticket information and a full schedule.

Getting there
Most events are held at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown off of Bay Street.

Parking is available at metered spots throughout downtown, including lots at the marina, Beaufort County Library and 500 Carteret St. Meter hours are from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

A free shuttle from the Beaufort County Government complex on Ribaut Road is available for several events, including opening ceremonies and the headlining Concert in the Park.

Those who don't want to brave the parking crunch have a new option. The city's new day dock opened in May and offers boaters a free place to tie up near the east end of Waterfront Park.

Tickets

Tickets for the nightly events are sold at the gate but also available online at www.bftwaterfestival.com for pickup at will call outside the main gate starting an hour before the event. Organizers encourage people to buy tickets in advance for the Concert in the Park, guaranteeing admission if the park is otherwise at capacity.

Children 5 and younger are free.

Blessing The Fleet is one Beaufort Water Fest tradition that has changed a lot over the years

When the Beaufort Water Festival's Blessing The Fleet event started 62 years ago it was primarily to bless the shrimp boats and to introduce the new commodore. Many local shrimp boats participated.

It is Cheaper to Rent a Home than Own in South Carolina

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 13, 2018

Ashton Pointe Apartments, Beaufort, SCOwning a home is often considered the American dream — and it's an expensive one. Homeowners in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., pay from 33% to 93% more for housing each month than do renters living in the same state.

But many homeowners reap benefits that you can't get from renting, such as financial security and stability, tax deductions, and a vehicle for retirement savings.

While renting can't offer those long-term financial benefits, the study found that it's cheaper to rent on a month-to-month basis. If you're wondering how to save money for a down payment, renting can help you build that nest egg. However, in extremely expensive or competitive markets renting might be better for the long haul.

To determine the monthly homeownership premium — the additional cost of owning instead of renting, expressed as a percentage — NerdWallet compared 2015 American Community Survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau for the median gross rent and median homeownership cost in each state and Washington, D.C. Median gross rent includes the costs of monthly rent and utilities for all kinds of rental properties, and median homeownership cost includes monthly mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance and utilities.

This comparison doesn't include the down payment required to buy a home, which is traditionally 20% of the home price for conventional mortgages.

Key takeaways

Owning is more expensive everywhere. Across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., it costs more each month to own a home than to rent. The median cost people pay nationwide to own a home is 54% more than the median cost of monthly rent.

In some states, the cost of owning far eclipses renting.

In South Carolina it costs 43% more to own vs. rent each month!

Many High Earners are Renting Instead of Buying

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, June 06, 2018

Ashton Pointe Apartments, Beaufort, SCThe Fastest Growing Group of Renters: It May Surprise You

So you think you have the average American renter all figured out—that they're a group of young, unsettled, commitmentphobic folks, just starting out and scraping by? Well, you might want to widen out that picture a bit. The reality: The fastest-growing group of new renters includes those aged 50 or older, or younger folks raking in six-figure salaries, according to a new report.

This is a tale of the haves—who could afford to buy a home, but choose not to—and the have-nots, who don't make enough money to become homeowners. And although overall rental prices are starting to level off, and in some cases even dip a little, there still aren't nearly enough affordable rentals to meet the overwhelming demand from lower-income renters.

The new renter: Older and wealthier than you'd expect

Overall, renters had a median age of 40 in 2016—up from 38 in 2016. (In comparison, homeowners are a median 56.) That's because more baby boomers, whose kids have flown the coop, are downsizing out of their large, suburban homes and opting for maintenance-free rentals instead. No more mowing the lawn and shoveling snow for them! That's pushing up the median age of all renters.

More folks earning some serious dough are also choosing to rent rather than buy. About 13.3% of renter households made more than $100,000 in 2016. That's up from 9% in 2006.

That's partly because some high earners are saddled with high student debt loads, making it difficult to cobble together a down payment. In addition, more-walkable cities, many of which have undergone attractive revitalizations, have also become desirable places to live. So those with means are willing to lease a unit in a newly constructed community with luxe amenities.
